Texas Regional Pathways Network in South Texas

March 2022 | Vol.3, Iss. 7

The Texas Regional Pathways Network is well underway in South Texas, but with the pandemic in 2020-2021, RGV LEAD could not visit the TRPN districts in person. All meetings were held virtually. While virtual meetings save time on the road, the participants miss out on face-to-face engagement. This year, 2022, RGV LEAD and the TRPN program will offer virtual and face-to-face meetings. The goal is to hold virtual regional meetings and visit the participating districts in person. Dr. Norma Salaiz and Janie Johnston Lopez, RGV LEAD contractors, visited San Perlita ISD to see how they can assist the TRPN programs. They were pleasantly surprised to hear of the great AV/Media Tech success story the small community is experiencing.

Mr. Albert Peña, San Perlita ISD Superintendent, said this about the Media Tech class.

The San Perlita HS News Crew began as a group of students meeting at lunchtime to record podcasts where they interviewed guests on timely topics. They then helped members of the Elementary Student Council produce their own newscast. They gained the attention of longtime RGV newsman Rick Diaz, who came out to do a feature on them.Due to the flexibility offered by our District of Innovation status, we now have a part-time teacher teaching two sections of Audio-Video Production. Students create public service announcements, and newscasts, and assist our broadcast partner, Rio Sports Live, with the live streaming of athletic events, including our basketball tournaments and playoff games.

Rigo Ramos, Owner R2 Country Store

Mr. Peña noted that the local grocery store, R2 Country Store, owned by Rigo Ramos, has a TV monitor that airs the district’s channel. As high school students report stories to their peers, the local community can see what’s happening as they shop in the convenience store. San Perlita ISD practices community engagement, one of the seven critical components of the Texas Regional Pathways Network grant.
