Over the past year, RGV LEAD has partnered across the Rio Grande Valley to strengthen connections between classrooms and careers. The goal is clear: give students more access to real experiences, career exploration, and pathways that help them see what is possible.

A keynote focused on labor, opportunity, and regional growth

RGV LEAD is honored to announce Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III as the keynote speaker for the 2026 event. His role brings a valuable perspective to a conversation that sits at the center of education and workforce planning. The Rio Grande Valley continues to grow, and that growth brings new questions for schools, employers, and community leaders.

How do students learn about careers before graduation? How do employers help shape the skills they need? How can education systems and industry partners create cleaner pathways from training to employment?

These questions are not abstract. They affect students deciding what comes next after high school. They affect families looking for stable career options. They affect employers seeking skilled talent. They also affect the broader economic future of communities across the Valley.

The featured discussion will ask who builds the workforce

This year’s featured discussion is titled

“The Bigger Conversation: From Classroom to Career, Who Builds the Workforce?”

That question reflects the shared nature of workforce development. No single school, company, college, or agency can build the future workforce alone. Students need guidance, exposure, hands-on learning, and trusted adults who can help them connect their interests to real career options.

Employers also play a key role. When industry leaders open doors to students through tours, job shadowing, internships, guest instruction, mentoring, or career-connected projects, students gain a clearer view of what work looks like beyond the classroom.

For educators, those connections can help make learning more relevant. A student who understands how math connects to construction, health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology, or logistics may see coursework differently.

Career awareness can turn a distant goal into a practical next step.

Hands-on learning helps students connect classroom lessons to real careers.

Real-world learning helps students see a future

Over the past year, RGV LEAD has focused on creating meaningful, real-world learning experiences that support student engagement, career exploration, and workforce readiness.

That work matters because students often make decisions about their future with limited exposure to the full range of careers available to them. Some may know about a handful of fields through family, friends, or school experiences. Others may not see how their strengths connect to local employers' needs.

Real-world learning helps close that gap. It can include:

  • Career conversations with industry professionals

  • Site visits that show students how local workplaces operate

  • Classroom projects tied to real industry challenges

  • College and career pathway exploration

  • Partnerships that connect academic skills with workforce needs

These experiences give students something powerful: context. They help students understand not only what careers exist, but what skills, training, and habits those careers require.

The Rio Grande Valley has a shared responsibility

The 2026 State of Education & Industry event will spotlight a basic truth: preparing tomorrow’s workforce begins by connecting students to opportunities today. That responsibility belongs to many partners.

Schools help students build academic foundations. Colleges and technical programs expand training options. Employers provide insight into current and future workforce needs. Economic development and workforce leaders help align regional efforts. Families and communities support students as they imagine and pursue their next steps.

When those groups work in isolation, students can miss opportunities. When they work together, students gain stronger pathways, and the region gains a better-prepared workforce.

RGV LEAD’s event is intended to keep that work moving forward throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
