RGV LEAD 2022 Regional Conference Speaker Ruben Cortez, Jr.

January 2022 | Vol.3, Iss. 5

The day was chilly, but the topics were hot! Thursday, January 20, 2022, was a cold, wintery day as temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley plummeted into the ’30s, but that did-n’t stop Valley educators from attending the RGV LEAD Regional Conference. Attendees listened to an inspiring speech by Texas State Board of Education member Ruben Cortez, Jr. Cortez shared the struggles he went through in life and as a student and emphasized that through the encouragement of his teachers and mother, he overcame obstacles to get where he is today. He said he had spent a lifetime advocating for students because someone cared enough to advocate for him.

Educators are at the front line in helping students. That smile in the morning can make all the difference in a child’s day.

He reminded us that, in our society in the RGV, the teacher is revered by parents, “Haz lo que dice La Maestra.” As a Board member, he uses his influence to remind others that it is important to give teachers the basic things they need to be successful in the classroom, and we need to be asking the question, “What are we doing to address the needs of the small districts?” Through the efforts of many vast bans, internet and COVID testing are now available to many rural schools in the RGV. He continues to be an advocate for students! The conference breakout sessions delivered great information that educators and administrators can use. Postsecondary representatives made presentations.
