Academic Leadership Alliance (A•L•A)

Updated: Sep 20

INTRODUCTION

A new initiative called the Academic Leadership Alliance (A•L•A) was launched in 2003 by the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, Region One Education Service Center, RGV LEAD, and school districts. The aim is to offer students business and industry experiences that go beyond the typical classroom setting, providing unique learning opportunities.

This continuous design fosters collaboration between local businesses, industries, and school districts to assist educators in recognizing career opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley (The Valley) and creating workplace skills lessons using essential strategies. This partnership is crucial as it allows educators to immerse themselves in the employers' environment and then bring back practical workplace skills to impart to their students.

Offering high-quality workplace experiences for educators is a proactive method to narrow the divide between education and high-skill, high-wage, high-demand professions. Fundamentally, A•L•A aims to support educators in meeting students at their current developmental stage and guiding them towards a promising future.

PERSONALIZED FOR RAPID LEARNING

RGV LEAD collaborates with companies and organizations keen on fostering real-world problem-solving in classrooms and shaping the future workforce. The objective is to enhance the relevance of classroom instruction to produce more effective and successful employees in the future. Similar to an apprenticeship or internship, an externship is a training program provided by educational institutions and private businesses that offer educators brief practical experiences in their field of expertise.

Participating educators create lesson plans that outline specific learning goals. These lessons cover both hard and soft skills. Hard skills are the skills typically taught in school, while soft skills such as decision-making, time management, attention to detail, and leadership become crucial as students transition from school to their careers.

For instance, aspects like professional appearance, customer service skills, proper utilization of technology in the workplace, counseling materials, and supporting materials that reflect their experiences at employer worksites. Subsequently, educators implement these lesson plans and counseling materials with students during the academic year following their externships. Each educator engages with over one hundred students annually, impacting thousands of students through the participation of their teachers and counselors.

MODERN CURRICULUM

The externship focuses on the partnership between academic instructors and Career & Technical Education (CTE) instructors. Teams of educators engaged in a one-week externship (total of 40 hours) to pinpoint the following objectives:

  • The skills that employers look for in new hires

  • Postsecondary training options that align with their career pathway and specific occupations

  • Essential employability skills that can be strengthened/enhanced within the existing curriculum

  • Courses and collaborative projects that will enhance the 7 key components of effective pathways.

Throughout the academic year, teachers collaborate with students on a project focused on employability, involving interactions with different employers, economic development organizations, and higher education institutions.

Each team's employability project will cover the following 7 essential pathway components:

  • Partnerships across various sectors

  • Alignment with labor market needs

  • Incorporation of challenging core academic and career-oriented education

  • Guidance on college and career opportunities

  • Connections between secondary and postsecondary education

  • Credentials with value in the job market

  • Continuum of work-based learning experiences.

OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCOVERY

Teachers engage in meaningful conversations with students to personalize their educational plans as best as they can to equip them for their future professional paths. A key aspect of ALA participants' efforts to enhance their students' readiness for college and careers involves embracing a strategy that gives them chances to explore. By taking this approach, educators give their students a practical understanding of the various career paths open to them and the educational qualifications needed to thrive in each particular field.
