The A•L•A Summer Educator Externships have expanded from 2003, when 15 educators from one school district participated, to approximately 65 educators from eight school districts in 2018. When each school district joins the A•L•A consortium, the district enters into a Memorandum of Understanding with the A•L•A founding partners (MEDC, Region One ESC, and RGV LEAD). Among other provisions, the MOUs signed by school districts acknowledge the roles of the founding partners, as follows:
All partners … acknowledge that … the actual participation of Externs … in each year is contingent on employer recruitment and funding available for the project on May 1 of each year. All partners acknowledge that the final decision regarding actual participation of all ISDs and externs in each year is made by the organizations that entered into the original A•L•A MOU in May 2003 (MEDC, Region One ESC, and RGV LEAD).
Key administrators from participating school districts assume collaborative leadership roles for each A•L•A Summer Educator Externship project in accordance with the MOUs signed when the school districts joined the project.
The A•L•A Regional Coordinator’s duties include working with the A•L•A leadership team and with partnering school districts and employers. Jill Williams assumed the position of A•L•A Regional Coordinator in the Fall of 2014.
